973.7 CIV - Bailey, Anne and Sutherland, Daniel - Civil War Arkansas: Beyond Battles and Leaders

This book contains an assortment of essays by various authors that have been published in scholarly journals.  Each essay focuses on an aspect of the Civil War that is unique to Arkansas and oftentimes ignored.

 

973.7 CIV - Christ, Mark - Civil War Arkansas 1863: The Battle for a State

Discusses various battles that occurred in Arkansas (Pea Ridge, Little Rock, Helena, and others) using primary sources from participants in the Civil War and an analytical perspective from the author. 

 

973.7 SHE - Shea, William - War in the West: Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove

 This short book gives facts and details of the events that transpired around the Battle of Pea Ridge and the Battle of  Prairie Grove. The author holds a Ph.D in the subject matter of this book.

 

976 ARK - Ferguson, John - Arkansas and the Civil War

         A selection of primary and secondary sources about many aspects of the Civil War in Arkansas (organizations,

         governors, officer pay, songs, poems, casualties, etc.).  This is a great go-to source that provides many details and facts

         about Arkansas during this time period. 

 

976 THO - Thomas, David - Arkansas in War and Reconstruction: 1861-1874

         This book not only covers facts about the Civil War in Arkansas, but it also discusses what happened in Arkansas

         several years after the Civil War ended, during the Reconstruction era.  It gives insight into the devastation that

         Arkansas faced while having to form a new way of life for many people. 

 

976.7 MOB - Mobley, Freeman - Making Sense of the Civil War in Batesville-Jacksonport and Northeast Arkansas: 1861-1874

This award-winning book contains primary and secondary sources to piece together the events that happened in a part of Arkansas that is often not talked about in respects to the Civil War as other parts of the state.  This book focuses on what happened in Northeast Arkansas and the Arkansas-Missouri border.

973.713 DOC - Crawford, Julienne - Documenting Arkansas: The Civil War, 1861-1865

      This book is made up of primarily primary sources from this time period in Arkansas's history while including just

      enough curator commentary to provide background information when needed.  It is published by a well-respected

      organization; therefore, this would be a good source for an academic paper. 

 

976.7 MAH - Mahan, Russell - Fayetteville, Arkansas in the Civil War

  If you are interested in learning more about our neighbors in Fayetteville, Arkansas, this book is for you.  The

  material focuses on the events that happened in Fayetteville, Arkasnas during the Civil War, and how those events

  shaped the city's future. 

 

976.7 HAN - Hanley, Ray - Remembering Arkasnas Confederates and the 1911 Little Rock Veterans Reunion

  This book provides a personal touch to the stories and primary sources that are often used when learning about the

  Civil War in Arkansas.  If you are interested in learning about the lives of Arkansas Civil War soldiers after the war

  ended, you will be able to find that informaiton in that book.

TimelineThis website page includes a timeline of events that happened in Arkansas during the Civil War.  This gives a good, basic understanding of how and when events transpired in Arkansas. 

 

Battles Database - This is a searchable database that you can use to find information about a specific Civil War battle in Arkansas.  This database will only work if you know some prior information about the battle, such as the location, name, or date.

 

Arkansas Civil War Encyclopedia - The most comprehensive list of information about Arkansas during the Civil War.  It is produced by the Central Arkansas Library System and includes both primary and secondary sources on a variety of subjects regarding the Civil War.  

 

Primary Sources - This is a database that is made entirely of primary sources that pertain to Arkansas during the Civil War.  You can use the search bar in the upper left corner to narrow down the results to your specific need.

Battle of Pea Ridge - Here is a historical map showing the movements of the Union and Confederate armies during the Battle of Pea Ridge. 

 

Battle of Helena - This is an excelent source specifically about the Battle of Helena during the Civil War.  It is a commentary and background about the battle that includes a primary source letter from a soldier that experienced the battle.  If you are looking for information that incoprorates commenatary about a primary source, this resource is for you. 

 

Black Arkansan Soliders - This secondary source highlights the valiant efforts the Black Regiments had while fighting in battles, specifically at Big Creek. If you need a source that focuses on the experiences of minority soldiers in the Arkansas Civil War, this is for you.
